In Surprise, wall prep is the install. Orange peel and knockdown are standard. Builder latex is not wallpaper primer. Fresh paint from a flip or new build needs cure time measured in weeks, not hours. Skipping those steps is the main reason seams lift when desert air and monsoon humidity trade places.
Step-by-step
- Assess texture. If you can see and feel orange peel, plan skim coat or liner.
- Remove old paper. Painted vinyl and lifting layers come off first.
- Repair. Patch torn face paper, nail pops, and cracks. Sand smooth.
- Prime. Use a wallpaper primer / sizing appropriate to the wall and product — not another coat of wall paint.
- Wait. Respect primer dry time and paint cure time before hanging.
- Control the room. Run the AC. Extreme heat while paste sets is a Surprise-specific mistake.
What “smooth enough” means
Paint can look fine on texture. Wallpaper magnifies it. If light rakes across bumps, those bumps will show through most prints and especially through grasscloth.
